BRAZIL: Lula meets Obama in the White House

Brazil's President Lula da Silva this week became the first Latin American head of state to meet the new US President, Barack Obama, since his inauguration in January. The meeting highlighted the Obama administration's view of Brazil as its main strategic partner in the region. The role suits Lula's regional leadership ambitions. But behind the cordial exchanges were political and economic divergences  that could prolong the mutual reticence that marked Brazil-US relations under former US president George W Bush.
