New armed forces commander-in-chief. On 14 October President Horacio Cartes swore in General Jorge Francisco Ramírez Gómez, the head of the army, as the new commander-in-chief of Paraguay’s armed forces, replacing General Miguel Ángel Christ Jacobs. This is the first change to the military top brass since President Cartes took office on 15 August. In a report published on 11 October, the leading local daily
ABC Color suggested that the change could stem from differences between Defence Minister General Bernardino Soto Estigarribia and Christ Jacobs about changes at the top of the military. Ramírez Gómez has been replaced as head of the army by Major-General Jorge Francisco Ramírez Gómez, who will take over on an interim basis until he is promoted to the rank of general at the end of the year.
