BRAZIL: No change at airports

With almost all of the participants for the 2014 Fifa World Cup now decided, Brazil is becoming increasingly anxious about its capacity to deliver a successful tournament. Last week, following reports in the local media that the hour-long flight from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo on 12 June, the opening day of the World Cup, would cost around R$2,500 (US$1,150), almost 10 times the usual amount, the government announced the creation of an inter-ministerial committee to look into ‘abusive’ pricing during the tournament. More worrying for the government, if not football fans, is whether the current investment model in its air infrastructure will allow for the completion of the necessary upgrades at host city airports ahead of the competition.
