VENEZUELA: Maduro marks six months at the helm

President Nicolás Maduro celebrated his first six months in power by threatening to imprison opposition leaders apparently preparing acts of sabotage to coincide with the municipal elections on 8 December. His comment was eye-catching; not for the extravagant claim bereft of evidence, now commonplace; but because he mentioned the municipal elections. Maduro’s electoral reticence stands in stark contrast to the ‘permanent campaign’ waged by former president Hugo Chávez (1999-2013).
