MEXICO: Mock independence movement forms in BC

Inhabitants of the state of Baja California (BC) are flocking to a new group on the social networking site Facebook seeking independence. Over 130,000 people now ‘like’ the largely tongue-in-cheek group which will attract even more followers after the senate voted to approve the homogenization of value-added tax (VAT) in Mexico’s border states with the rest of the country on 29 October. Senators from the right-wing Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) stormed out of the building in protest. The PAN argues that the increase in VAT from 11% to 16% in border states will have a negative impact on more than 8m people, with various economic sectors losing competitiveness with the US and the maquiladora industry dealt a heavy blow.
