HONDURAS: Free, fair and clean? – not really says the TSE

President Porfirio Lobo has taken umbrage at the barrage of questions raised by international observers as to the campaign for the 24 November general election, telling off external observers including the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations(UN) and the US ambassador to Honduras Lisa Kubiske for interfering and ‘discrediting’ the process with their loud warnings about the need for “credibility” and “transparency”, including in party finances; given the rumours about narco-infiltration (cash and candidates). On 3 November, however, just three weeks before the election, the president of the national electoral court (TSE), David Matamoros, admitted that the TSE was incapable of auditing campaign finances and said that there was no way of avoiding dirty money in the campaign.
