NICARAGUA: Ortega claims progress in gender equality; doubts persist

The Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government of President Daniel Ortega is trumpeting a recently released report on gender equality by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF) which places Nicaragua within the top ten countries globally in terms of efforts to close the gender gap. The government’s commitment to women’s rights has, however, been recently called into question by civil society groups following amendments passed by congress weakening a law against gender violence.
