New head of the joint staff. On 25 November Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera announced that Rear Admiral José Miguel Romero will take over as the new head of the joint chief of staff on 9 December, replacing General Hernán Mardones. President Piñera’s appointment of Romero, the commander of naval operations since December 2010, follows other recent changes to the military top brass, in line with procedure, such as the 19 November appointment of Humberto Oviedo Arriagada as
the new head of the army.
