EL SALVADOR-HONDURAS | Warplane purchase raises tension. Tension between El Salvador and Honduras was heightened by the latter’s 31 October confirmation that it has gone ahead with the purchase of 10 secondhand A-37 combat aircraft from Chile (though this acquisition had been announced by President Mauricio Funes back in August). The temperature began to rise in September after El Salvador reacted angrily to what it described as the military occupation by Honduras of Conejo Island, which Honduras considers its own [SSR-13-09].
