BRAZIL: Lula to keep oiling the wheels of the PT-PMDB bandwagon

At a leadership meeting on 1 December between the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and its senior coalition partner, the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), former president Lula da Silva (2003-2010) was tasked with ensuring that differences at the state level between the PT and the PMDB do not affect their alliance on the national stage ahead of the 2014 general election. In November, Lula met the PMDB party leader and federal vice-president Michel Temer for preliminary talks on state alliances for 2014. With the PT’s internal elections now resolved, and Rui Falcão returned as party president, the negotiations between the two parties have begun in earnest. On 5 October 2014 Brazil will hold presidential, parliamentary, gubernatorial and local assembly elections; one third of the senate will also be up for grabs.
