CHILE: Unions show their teeth

The build-up to the 17 November general elections and its aftermath was marked by major unrest by both the main workers’ union confederation, the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) as well as municipal workers’ unions led by the Asociación de Empleados Municipales de Chile (Asemuch). Deals have since been reached with the government of President Sebastián Piñera to end the strikes but the pending demands suggest that unions will remain a source of pressure on the next administration, which takes office in March 2014.
