The economics of crime
Various types of crime – from drug trafficking through to robberies and homicides – appear to be widespread in Latin America. Apart from dramatic newspaper and media coverage, at times it appears as if there is little systematic research or analysis into the problem, including its economic implications. But there is, in fact, a growing body of work on this complicated subject. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has just published its Human Development Report 2013-2014, which focuses on the issue under the title Citizen Security With A Human Face – Evidence and Proposals for Latin America. Some of its findings are startling.
