ARGENTINA: Police strikes trigger countrywide looting

Much of Argentina was rattled by a 10-day wave of looting across all but three of its provinces, an opportunistic response to strikes by provincial police forces in demand of substantial pay increases. The federal government responded by deploying federal police and Gendarmería troops to restore order as shopkeepers and other members of the public took up arms to confront the looters, but the unrest did not subside until most of the pay demands had been met.
