BOLIVIA-CHILE: Law bars Chilean firms from Uyuni

President Carlos Mesa last week promulgated a law which bars the extraction of non-metallic minerals in the area surrounding the Uyuni salt flats, next to the border with Chile. The law was drafted with the deliberate purpose of preventing Chilean firms from extracting ulexite (an ore of boron used in fertilisers and for some industrial purposes) in the border area.
