The crackdown on the street gangs known as maras in Central America is having a spillover effect on Mexico. Gang members from El Salvador and Honduras - the countries that have adopted the toughest anti-mara measures - have fled northwards. Some are following the main migrant trail back to the US, but others have been establishing new stomping grounds in Mexico. Mexican authorities reckon that about 3,000 mareros are currently active on both sides of their border with Guatemala.
