MEXICO: De la Madrid sets cat among the pigeons

In a radio interview broadcast on Noticias MVS on 13 May, former President Miguel de la Madrid (1982 to 1988) accused his successor, Carlos Salinas de Gortari, of corruption and drug smuggling. The content and timing of the accusation is sensational. The timing is particularly interesting because it comes after the panic over the AH1N1 (swine flu) virus is subsiding and public attention is switching to the mid-term congressional elections on 5 July.
