Paraguay’s labour unions have made good their threat to hold the first general strike in two decades in protest of economic policies pursued by the government led by President Horacio Cartes [RBS-14-03]. The widespread turnout for the 24-hour strike on 26 March, which virtually paralysed the country, forced the Cartes government to sit down with the demonstrators and hear their grievances.
