BRAZIL: Scandal implicates PMDB caciques in senate

The government-allied Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) has been weakened by yet another wrongdoing scandal in the senate. This has the potential to change the balance of power in Brazil's congress and lead to the demise of some of the most corrupt practices in Brazilian politics - which are embodied by the PMDB. It is now in the hands of President Lula da Silva to negotiate with the opposition the purging of some of the most powerful PMDB figures in the senate.
