Four different polls suggested this week that the contest in the
province of Buenos Aires ahead of the mid-term legislative elections on 28 June
is a virtual tie between former president Néstor Kirchner and Francisco de
Narváez. Kirchner is heading the government list of candidates; De Narváez the
slate presented by the opposition conservative alliance Unión Pro. Kirchner tore
into the press this week for backing his rival, and undermining democracy, after
the national daily Clarín ran a piece speculating that the government
might try and bring the 2011 presidential elections forward by a year should it
