The efforts by the government led by President Juan Manuel Santos to avert another national strike by the agricultural sector have failed. Less than a year after the last highly disruptive and politically damaging protests (in August-September 2013 [RA-13-10]), Colombian farmers are once again mobilising across the country to reiterate their demands for greater government assistance. The timing of the new protest action, less than a month before the 25 May presidential election, means that appeasing the sector is an immediate priority for President Santos.
