Biden meets Rousseff
Brazil: On 17 June US Vice-President Joe Biden met Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff. This was the first high-level bilateral meeting since Rousseff cancelled her first official visit to the US last year in the wake of the allegations made by US whistleblower Edward Snowden that the US National Security Agency (NSA) had spied upon Rousseff and other Brazilian government officials. Since then the two countries have been trying to rebuild mutual trust. A joint press conference scheduled to take place after the meeting was cancelled at the last minute, sparking speculation that talks had not been all positive. After the NSA scandal broke out, Rousseff demanded a full explanation and a public apology from the US. The US has provided some official explanations, but these have failed to satisfy Brazil and the Barack Obama administration has yet to issue a formal apology. The meeting was part of Biden’s Latin America tour, which began on 16 June and will also take in Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala.
