CHILE: Pinochet-era education law finally replaced

President Michelle Bachelet this week promulgated the new education law, Ley General de Educación (LGE), three years after massive student protests demanding reform of the Pinochet-era education law (Loce). Students claimed that the new law was “a betrayal". The problem is that the law is effectively toothless until congress approves two “implementation bills" to create a superintendence of education and a quality-control agency, and to provide more funding for state school education.
