VENEZUELA: Education reform triggers protests

President Hugo Chávez promulgated a new education law on 15 August, which had been passed a day earlier by the national assembly. Chávez said it would provide equal opportunities for the poor and marginalised. The opposition coalition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática, supported by public universities and student federations, is calling for a large march to the national assembly building on 22 August to protest against the new law and demand that it be submitted to a referendum. It claims that the law will lead to “socialist indoctrination" of schools and universities. “If the law makes the bourgeoisie squeal, it must be good," Chávez responded.
