President Mauricio Funes enjoys an approval rating of 86%, according
to a poll conducted in late July and released this week by CID-Gallup. This is a
remarkable achievement in a country characterised by deep political
polarisation. It is also the highest approval rating of any Central American
president polled in the last decade. The most eye-catching feature of the poll -
a survey of 1,218 respondents from across El Salvador - was that 68% of those
who admitted supporting the right-wing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena)
approved of Funes; only 23% disapproved. End of preview - This article contains approximately 565 words.
