CARIBBEAN: Turks & Caicos stripped of home rule

The Turks and Caicos Islands, a British overseas territory, will be ruled directly by Britain until elections in July 2011. The British foreign office said it was suspending local government to restore “good order". The chief minister, Galmo Williams, went as far as to describe the British government's actions as a “coup" - a word which is particularly resonant in the region right now after recent events in Honduras. Williams had replaced Michael Misick, who resigned in March over corruption allegations.
