Bolivia: On 5 September Bolivia’s economy & finance minister, Luis Arce, began a four-day visit to the US. Stops included Harvard University, where he gave a talk outlining Bolivia’s economic model and trumpeting the various achievements of the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government led by President Evo Morales. Arce pointed out that Bolivia’s real annual GDP growth figure for 2013 (6.8%) was the highest of the last 38 years, while extreme poverty dropped to 18.7% in 2012, down from 34.7% in 2005 (the year before Morales first took office). Arce also noted improvements in the Gini coefficient measuring income inequality (where 0 is perfect equality and 1 perfect inequality), highlighting that the index for Bolivia dropped to 0.47 in 2012, down from 0.60 in 2005. Arce’s trip also took in Rhode Island, New York and Miami, where he met Bolivian residents.
