Uruguay's electoral campaign has descended
into acrimony. The bitter personal insults being traded between the presidential
candidate for the ruling Frente Amplio (FA), José Mujica, and his main rival
from the opposition Blancos, Luis Alberto Lacalle, prompted President Tabaré
Vázquez last week to call for a change in the tone of the debate. No sooner had
Vázquez expressed his concerns than Mujica set off further fireworks in a very
candid interview with the Argentine daily, La Nación, on 13 September,
