Nicaragua's supreme electoral court (CSE) last week
authorised four alliances and three parties to compete in the March 2010
regional elections scheduled for the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (Raan) and
the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (Raas) on the Caribbean Coast. Given the
outcry over the November 2008 municipal vote, which took place in the absence of
authorised electoral watchdogs and prompted accusations of widespread fraud
against the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), the
preparations for next year's regional contest are attracting considerable
