COLOMBIA-VENEZUELA: Uribe opts to disband DAS

Colombia's secret police, Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad (DAS), could soon receive “the Christian burial" advocated by President Alvaro Uribe's former defence minister, Juan Manuel Santos, eight months ago. For the first time, Uribe has called for the DAS to be dismantled, and replaced by a new streamlined agency with fewer responsibilities. The timing of his announcement could be a response to criticism emanating from Washington and Caracas.
