President Juan Carlos Varela is serious about making good his campaign pledge to crack down on official corruption – a major public complaint against the previous administration of Ricardo Martinelli (Cambio Democrático, 2009-2014). Earlier this month Varela appointed Angélica Maytín, the executive president of the local branch of the Berlin-based watchdog, Transparency International, as his new anti-corruption czar.
