A local think tank, Fundación Internacional para el Desafío Económico Global (Fideg), in November released a study indicating that extreme poverty was on the rise. The report, which nonetheless found a drop in overall poverty, prompted some questions over the efficacy of the left-wing Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government’s social assistance schemes, including its flagship ‘Hambre Cero’ (Zero Hunger) programme.
