Fujimori convicted. Peru's former president Alberto Fujimori was convicted for the fourth and final time last week. He received a six-year sentence for wiretapping opponents and bribing legislators. Fujimori pleaded guilty to the charges to expedite a trial that would have exposed the full extent of his kleptocracy, and damaged the prospects of his daughter Keiko winning the presidency in 2011. He employed the same tactic in late July when he was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for paying US$15m to his security chief Vladimiro Montesinos. Having already been convicted to 25 years for human rights abuses, a fourth conviction, in itself, was a side issue. He is resting his hope on Keiko winning election and finding a way to pardon him.
