MEXICO: Calderón squares up to another union

The labour ministry confirmed this week that it would not recognise Martí­n Esparza Flores as the leader of the Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas (SME). Esparza is important because the SME controls the state-owned electricity distribution company, Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC), which supplies Mexico City and its hinterland with power. LyFC is a byword for corruption and inefficiency. What makes the move against the SME unusual is that the government of President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa has not challenged other powerful trade union leaders.
