The labour ministry confirmed this week that it would not recognise
Martín Esparza Flores as the leader of the Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas
(SME). Esparza is important because the SME controls the state-owned electricity
distribution company, Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC), which supplies Mexico City
and its hinterland with power. LyFC is a byword for corruption and inefficiency.
What makes the move against the SME unusual is that the government of President
Felipe Calderón Hinojosa has not challenged other powerful trade union
leaders.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1291 words.
