Following a spate of violent attacks, the Dominican (DR) government led by President Danilo Medina has taken the unprecedented step of closing its diplomatic consulates in Haiti until the Haitian government can provide it with assurances that they will be better protected. Bilateral relations were already strained over the serious cross-border social tensions sparked by the end of the immigration regularisation programme launched by the DR last year.
