President Lula da Silva has defended his ties with Iran's President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is due to arrive for a state visit to Brazil next week,
as the Brazilian opposition showed support for Israel during the visit of
President Shimon Peres last week. Lula hopes he can become a bridge between Iran
and Israel and win a place in the Middle East peace negotiations, sealing his
ambitions to be seen as a global statesman. The opposition argues that Lula's
ties with Ahmadinejad cast doubt over his administration's rejection of
terrorism, as the Brazilian supreme court came under heavy pressure from the
justice ministry to grant asylum to Cesare Battisti, a former member of a
communist terror cell whom the Italian government is seeking extradition for
murder.End of preview - This article contains approximately 727 words.
