Colombia’s Santos makes repeat gesture to Farc

Development: On 9 April Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos extended for another 30 days the suspension of air strikes against the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas, which he first decreed one month ago.

Significance: The extension of the suspension of air strikes shows that President Santos is determined to de-escalate the internal armed conflict. It was first implemented by Santos in the wake of the deal struck between the government negotiating team and its Farc counterparts in Cuba on 7 March to work together to clear anti-personnel landmines and other improvised explosives placed by the guerrillas. Santos’s decision coincided with the staging of a massive nationwide ‘march for peace’ yesterday to pay homage to the victims of the armed conflict on ‘the national day of memory and solidarity for victims’.
