On 1 June Bogotá residents will say goodbye – and good riddance – to one of the city’s least loved institutions. Some 3,500 privately operated colectivo buses will be removed from the capital’s streets to be replaced by modern hybrid buses linked into the Integrated Public Transport System (SITP). With President Juan Manuel Santos also presenting Gustavo Petro, the mayor of Bogotá, with a cheque for US$3.8bn towards the construction of an underground metro, the city’s beleaguered commuters have reason to be cautiously optimistic about the future of public transport.
