Alex Ferrier, the new governor of the eastern department of Beni, announced last week that he would promote the Villa Tunari-San Ignacio de Moxos highway through a local indigenous territory and national park, Isiboro Sécure (Tipnis) linking Beni and Cochabamba department. The announcement by Ferrier, who won an unprecedented victory in the 3 May run-off for President Evo Morales’ Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) in what was traditionally an opposition bastion [WR-15-19], came days after Morales said that the project would be going ahead.
