MINING: ARATIRÍ PROJECT - Promising huge investment falters and shrinks

It started out, five years ago, promising to be Uruguay’s biggest-ever foreign investment, which would more than double the country’s exports of minerals. Towards the end of Mujica’s term of office it had been downsized and now work seems to have ground to a halt. Though the project had been strongly opposed on environmental grounds, it was the market that caused the turnaround.
