TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: Opposition elects first female leader

The veteran leader of the main opposition United National Congress (UNC), Basdeo Panday, was decisively beaten by Kamla Persad-Bissessar in a three-way party leadership contest on 24 January. Panday was far from magnanimous in defeat. First he maintained that despite the result he remained the opposition leader until sitting MPs decided to the contrary. Then he claimed sabotage. Persad-Bissessar called for the UNC to unite to provide a more effective opposition to Prime Minister Patrick Manning's People's National Movement (PNM).
