GUATEMALA: Portillo to be extradited to the US?

The US this week charged former president Alfonso Portillo (2000-2004), with money laundering via US banks, and requested his extradition. Portillo's subsequent arrest, after a brief spell at large, signals yet another victory for the UN-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig), still basking in its recent success over the Rosenberg case [WR-10-03]. Cicig's chief, Carlos Castresana, spelt out its significance in terms of illustrating that “nobody is above the law".
