ST KITTS & NEVIS |
Elections. The ruling Labour Party (LP), led by Prime Minister Denzil Douglas, won a fourth consecutive five-year term in general elections held on 25 January, with a slightly reduced majority. The LP, which fought its campaign pledging to boost economic growth and pay off the island's debt (est. US$2bn) won six of eight parliamentary seats allotted to St Kitts. The main opposition People's Action Movement (PAM), whose campaign had centred on criticising the government's failure to clear the debt, won two seats - one more than previously. In the island of Nevis, the Nevis-based Concerned Citizens Movement held on to its two seats, and the Nevis Reformation Party kept a single seat. The PAM is challenging the results, alleging irregularities, but international observers said the vote was fair and peaceful.
