Venezuela’s main opposition alliance, Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), has called on the international community to bear witness to “grotesque electoral fraud” in the run up to the 6 December national legislative elections. Jesús Torrealba, the MUD’s secretary general, on 19 July directly accused the government led by President Nicolás Maduro and the president of the national assembly, Diosdado Cabello, of being behind various legal decisions by the national electoral council (CNE) that appear to tilt the playing field in favour of the ruling left-wing Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV).
