On 16 July President Ollanta Humala announced, ‘Today, for the first time, Peru ceased to be the first producer of coca leaf for the drugs trade, respecting that which goes to traditional consumption [...] This is a recognition at global level of the government’s effort that in four years has reduced the area cultivated with coca by more than 20,000 hectares and has allowed the reduction of drug production.’ He was reacting to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (
