President-elect Sebastián Piñera announced his cabinet this week, one
month before he takes office on 11 March. He opted predominantly for highly
qualified technocrats but political neophytes. As many as 13 of the 22 ministers
have no party allegiance, while the Union Demócrata Independiente (UDI), the
senior partner in Piñera's Coalición por el Cambio, and Renovación Nacional
(RN), were awarded just four ministries each. Piñera's “government of national
unity" did not materialise but he did manage to persuade a veteran member of
Democracia Cristiana (DC), part of the outgoing Concertación coalition, to join
his cabinet. End of preview - This article contains approximately 869 words.
