Canal workers’ strike averted in Panama; but other problems persist

Development: On 11 August Panama’s powerful Sindicato Único de Trabajadores de la Construcción y Similares (Suntracs) construction worker’s union reached an agreement with the Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC), the multinational consortium carrying out the construction work on the Panama Canal’s third set of locks – the biggest project under the US$5.2bn Canal expansion plan - to call off a strike called for today (12 August).
