Egypt meets Mexican demand over tourist killings

Development: On 27 September Egypt’s foreign minister, Sameh Shoukry, promised his Mexican peer, Claudia Ruiz Massieu, that the Egyptian government would provide compensation for victims of the attack on Mexican tourists by Egyptian military forces in the Western Desert on 13 September, during which eight Mexican nationals were killed and six injured.

Significance: The commitment by the Egyptian government to provide compensation to the victims will be seen as important, but insufficient, progress at home. Mexico’s foreign ministry (SRE) is coming under mounting political pressure to ratchet up the pressure on Egypt to deliver results from the “full and exhaustive investigation” it has promised into the tragic incident. The governor of Jalisco state, Aristóteles Sandoval, a member of the state and federally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), last week went as far as to call for “radical diplomatic action”, including the severance of diplomatic relations with Egypt, unless “clear information” is provided very soon into the progress of the investigations. Six of the eight Mexicans killed in Egypt hailed from Jalisco.
