MEXICO: Foreign ministry demands what interior failed to deliver
It is difficult to avoid drawing some parallels between the two major news items in Mexico at the moment. A mainly peaceful march in Mexico City on 26 September marked the first anniversary of the disappearance of 43 trainee students in Iguala, Guerrero state. Two days earlier President Enrique Peña Nieto met relatives of the students and promised a fresh investigation into the case after a report by independent experts found serious flaws with the original investigation by the federal attorney general’s office (PGR). Meanwhile, the foreign ministry was demanding “a full and exhaustive investigation” by Egypt into the military attack in the Western Desert on 13 September which claimed the lives of eight Mexican tourists. It received assurances that such an investigation would take place but the reaction of the Mexican opposition suggests there is no more faith in the Egyptian government delivering than there is the Mexican government over Iguala.
