PRD faces fight for survival

Silvano Aureoles took office as governor of the troubled western state of Michoacán on 1 October, returning the left-wing Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) to a former bastion just as its main edifice is crumbling in the Distrito Federal (DF). The radical PRD splinter outfit, Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), which replaced the PRD as the largest party in the DF legislative assembly on 15 September, is threatening to usurp its progenitor’s position as the main force on the left of Mexico’s political spectrum. Conscious of this pressure, the PRD has struck up an alliance with the right-wing Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) to unite against the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) in certain states in next year’s gubernatorial elections.
