Bachelet receives setback from ICJ

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague has decided that it has jurisdiction to rule on a claim filed in 2013 by the Bolivian government against Chile in 2013 over the latter’s obligation to negotiate access to the Pacific Ocean, which Bolivia lost to Chile in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). The decision regarding comes at an unfortunate time for President Michelle Bachelet, whose approval ratings remain at rock bottom on the back of recent official corruption scandals, disgruntlement over the government’s policy agenda, a slowing economy and security concerns.
